The venerable symbol of Venice for a thousand years, The Winged Lion Of St. Mark resting on an open book is omnipresent in Venice, seen on buildings, courtyard wells, gates, doorbells, bridges, and palazzos. With such loaded symbolism of the winged lion in Venetian cultural and artistic heritage, it is one of Venetian Murano Glass masters' favorite subjects.

With incredible skill and precise craftsmanship Murano Glass artisans made this traditional biblical representation of St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice, using only the ancient methods and techniques of Venetian glass-making. Only the finest source materials went into creating the perfectly transparent liquid glass mixture, accented with a generous infusion of genuine 24k gold, creating gorgeous golden sparkles throughout. Then through hours of hard work shaping hot glass and moving it to the furnace and back, the glass mixture was transformed by the skilled hands of the artists from a blob of glass into a magnificent winged lion sculpture worthy of the most distinctive museums, galleries, and private homes. A dream of every Venice lover, the Lion Of St. Mark evokes images of glorious Venice sparkling in the morning sun and calls on you to make another visit soon.

  • Measurements: This Murano Glass Lion sculpture is about 9 inches wide and 7 inches high.
  • Authenticity: The Winged Lion is handmade in a reputable factory on Murano Island in Venice, Italy, and features the original sticker. It is also accompanied by the certificate of authenticity.
  • The sculpture is very well packaged to avoid damage in transit.
  • As this Murano Glass Winged Lion of St. Mark is a unique artistic sculpture made by hand, some variations of colors and patterns, as well as random bubbles inside are possible. These do not constitute a defect but rather are the very features by which experts recognize authentic Murano Glass.

Gold Foil or Gold Leaf is used in Murano Glass to create designs that seem to shimmer and glow, which is achieved by infusing very thin pieces of real 24 karat gold foil into the liquid glass. This technique is used in crafting Murano glassware ranging from small beads to large sculptures and vases. In larger pieces, the Venetian glass artisan gathers a big blob of glass at the end of a metal stick, then wraps gold foil around the blob, creating a thin outer layer of pure gold, and then puts the blob into the furnace to ensure that the gold permanently fuses with the glass. In this way masters in Murano Glass factories can create gold Millefiori or Sommerso glassware, adding a touch of pure sunshine to art glass.
