Venice has been a large center of Jewish life and culture in the middle ages, with vibrant Jewish community that included people of Ashkenazi, Levantine, and Sephardic origins, who fled persecution in the hostile parts of Europe. While far from being a liberal society, Venice was nevertheless more tolerant of Jews than many other places, and despite their relative isolation, Jewish people took part in many aspects of Venetian life, including medicine and commerce. Infamously known as the first ghetto in the world, the Venetian 'getto' (in Venetian dialect) was a place where Jews lived, practiced their religion, treasured their cultural heritage, and it is where Jewish life continues today, albeit on a much smaller scale.

This meticulously crafted rabbi created by local Murano glass artisans stands as the reminder of the thriving Jewish culture and religious tradition that existed in Venice for over 500 years, and symbolizes its continuity and strength. Holding torah, a well-known symbol of Judaism, this wise scholarly Murano Glass rabbi sustains the light of Jewish heritage and alludes to the better, more enlightened future.

Bring this fine Venetian sculpture to your home to carry on the light of Jewish heritage or give it as a gift to your Jewish friends or loved ones as a symbol of endurance and vitality of Jewish culture.

Measurements: The rabbi sculpture measures just under 5-1/2 inches in height.
  • Made entirely by hand in a traditional Murano workshop by a family that has been making Murano Glass for several generations.
  • The sculpture comes well packaged to avoid damage in transit and comes with the certificate of authenticity.
  • Because each Murano Glass piece is a unique work of art made by hand, some variations of colors and patterns are possible.

Love it! It is great addition to the Murano Glass Rabbi I bought in Italy. I gave it a 4 star instead of 5 because the one I bought in Italy had a more define hand with actual fingers on each hand. Other than that it is beautiful

Rating: <span itemprop="ratingValue">4</span> of <span itemprop="bestRating">5</span> Stars! [4 of 5 Stars!]

Lampworking technique of glass-making, which dates back to ancient Egypt, was revived by Murano glass artisans around the fourteenth century. This technique is based on heating up a blob of glass under a small flame from a lamp or a torch until it reaches malleable state, then blowing and using simple tools or just hands to create various forms and designs. Lampworking allows the artisan's creativity to blossom, as copper sparkles, various minerals, and pieces of glass cane are fused together in this process to create rich colors and imaginative patterns that are always unique. Murano Glass masters often use lampworking method to create small jewelry, such as pendants, earrings, or rings, as well as keychains, barrettes, pillboxes, and figurines.
