This gorgeous small round Murano glass paperweight is showcasing the most popular Murano glass technique - Millefiori (translated from Italian as a thousand flowers). Murano masters use this ancient glassmaking method with great precision, creating ever-more-complex designs and shapes, which earn them worldwide fame. This very complicated technique is based on combining lots of tiny glass mosaic pieces and manipulating them by hand and in the furnace. This results in pieces that are unique, colorful, and mesmerizing.
This fine square featuring lots of colors and intricate shapes on each little Millefiori piece was crafted entirely by hand in a family workshop on Murano island, which has been specializing in Millefiori for decades. This beautiful and timeless Murano glass sculpture will be an instant conversation piece in your home or office and can be used as a decorative display piece or as a functional paperweight. It makes an amazing gift for a special person in your life, who will no doubt appreciate its artistry and fine craftsmanship, and treasure the special bond with Venice.
- This paperweight measures 1-3/4 inches in diameter and is about 7/8 inch thick.
- The rectangle paperweight is created by a master from a well-known Murano glass-making family using only traditional techniques and tools. It comes with the certificate of authenticity.
- Because of the features of Millefiori Murano Glass technique, each paperweight is unique, and while it will always be in the color pattern and shape shown, there will inevitably be variations in the patterns of each individual piece, which is what makes authentic Murano Glass so popular and sought-after.
I was reading a book called Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell, and in it they mentioned millefiori. I have always regretted not getting myself a piece of Murano when I was in Venice so this mention inspired me to look it up. I found Glass of Venice and bought myself this piece, which is exactly what I wanted - small and exquisite. If your considering getting it, don't hesitate. It's lovely.

The paperweight was much more gorgeous than the website showed. I got this as a gift for someone who collects them and I'm thinking of buying this one for myself!
Everything about the order was perfect; thank you!

The technique of fusing together small colored fragments of glass dates all the way back to Ancient Egypt and Rome. After the fall of Rome, having been lost for centuries, this intricate technique was reinvented by Murano glass masters in the 15th century, and given new life and worldwide fame. While this technique is called "Murrine" on Murano island, outside of Venice it was dubbed "Millefiori", or "a thousand flowers" for its resemblance to a blossoming meadow.
A Millefiori design starts with the rods of different colors, each made by stretching a blob of glass into a cane. These canes are then cut into small segments, and the segments are carefully arranged by hand into a pattern that fits within a desired shape. Finally, the resulting arrangement is put into a special furnace where the tiny glass pieces are carefully fused together in high heat, and then gradually cooled off. This is how Murano masters create their famous Millefiori pendants, earrings, cufflinks, pill boxes, paperweights and many other beautiful and unique Millefiori jewelry pieces that are instantly recognized and valued for their artistic appeal and fine craftsmanship. Enjoy your Murano Glass jewelry creation, knowing that it was carefully handmade by talented Murano Glass artisans in Venice, Italy.
